On shutting up

I came to an uncomfortable realization this week, watching yet more women in the public eye being bombarding with threats of violence, rape and murder for having something to say, and for saying it. It’s becoming a depressingly familiar routine: a journalist, academic, celebrity or ordinary woman expresses an opinion, rebuts an argument, or simply [...]

It was sad to see last week Glasgow School of Art caught fire from an accidental spark that soon rose up from the basement to the roof destroying the famous library and the hen run, a beautiful glass lined corridor that connected the two wings. Luckily no one was harmed during this incident and the […]

Tangible Orchestra is a project by Picarøøn, a collaboration of artists Rebecca Gischel and Sebastian Walter, combining electronic and classical music perceived very individually in a three-dimensional space. Single units are triggered by people in close proximity and play a unique instrument, with the collection of individual instruments gathering as people congregate in the project […]

Dearest Cato

Cato has been very ill for the last two weeks and still today we are not sure how things are going to go. He has a very strong spirit and we are giving him masses of LOVE. Basically things have rather stopped at Ceratonia whilst we give all the care that Cato needs. Having said that we have had some positive moments in the last day or so and were able to plant a Walnut tree as well as many Pomegranate trees. Below are some varied photos and finally [...]

Sing to this fabric and it changes colour

The internet of things is usually discussed in terms of thermostats, light bulbs, and kitchen appliances. Embedding electronics into comforters, clothes, and wall-hangings, however, could yield far more poetic results.

Chromosonic, by Hungarian designer Judit Eszter Karpati, is an experimental electronic textile that can change colour and pattern in response to touch and sound. The magic comes courtesy of temperature-sensitive dye. Audio files, processed through an Arduino, heat up nichrome wires woven into the fabric, making its pattern pulse in time with whatever's playing. In a sense, the textile becomes a material visualisation of the tunes.

In which I am challenged to a duel

Courier vs Triathlete Last week, in a momentof bravado, I accepted fitness journalist Lucy Fry‘s challenge to race her over the 100km route of the FT London Sportive, on Sunday 11th May (i.e. tomorrow). And almost immediately I started to realize what a silly idea that was. For a start, I don’t own a roadbike, [...]

A Good Days Polargraphing

I first learned of polargraphing from either Letsmakerobots.com or from seeing Sandy at the Edinburgh Mini Maker Faire in 2013. When I recently realised that I had the necessary parts (minus a few of the cheaper components) to follow in the footsteps of Sandy’s Polargraph.co.uk build I downloaded the files and printed some blind pull-cord […]

Sexual assault in the saddle: why it sucks to be a woman cyclist sometimes

It was the perfect ride in the Peak District - until some cretin on a motorbike thought it would be hilarious to slap my bottom, both degrading and destabilising me with one gloved whack. By Helen Pidd

Most women cyclists have a grim story to tell: the youths shouting "lucky saddle!" as you pass, the dirty old man at the bus stop asking if you'll give him a ride.

But Saturday was the first time I'd actually been sexually assaulted while out on my bike.

The high-tech battle for cyclists to stay visible on the roads | Peter Walker

We try out a front light with a built-in laser projection of a bicycle, and a rear light with an integral HD camera.

In sensible cycling cultures like the Netherlands, riders are generally free to pootle about in relative safety, not obliged to be constantly aware of the next potential, looming hazard. In the UK and many other places its very different which is why those on two wheels are fighting back with technology.

Such aids come in two camps, which you can broadly term the protective and the retributive.
